Self Cleaning lug

by Tyler
(Virginia)

Ive always wondered, why would you need self cleaning lugs?

World of ATVs Answer: Self cleaning lugs are designed to prevent mud from packing in between the lugs on the tire. Without them the tire just loads up with mud, can't get any traction, and that's as far as you go.

The space between the lugs and the depth of the lugs is a good way to determine a serious ATV mud tire from a pretender.

The more space between lugs, and the deeper the lug, the better for serious ATV mudding. That's not the only criteria for judging mud tires, but if they don't have those traits, they're probably not going to be that great for ATV mud riding.

There is a down side to all this though. ATV tires that are dedicated to mud riding really aren't that great for any other kind of riding. Extreme ATV mud tires ride rough, wear out fast, and don't handle very well if they are ridden anywhere but mud.

Let's face it, most of us don't ride in the mud all the time. We just need a tire that will get through the mud we do come across in our normal ATV riding. That's why there are so many choices of "all purpose" ATV tires that have a reasonable ability to handle moderate to heavy mud.

Most of us don't ride in swamps and mud pits all the time. That's why we need ATV tires that can handle a variety of trail conditions, including mud. Self cleaning lugs are just one part of the design for a better all purpose ATV tire.

Thanks for the question - good one.
